There’s a book by James Clear called Atomic Habits. I wasn’t much of a reader until recently going deeper in my self-development process. However, I decided to get into it and found that this book sheds light on a very valuable idea. How to become better at something, 1% at a time, every day.

I’ll break it down in a moment, but I want to add something else to this idea. Vusi Thembekwayo, an entrepreneur and motivational speaker, posted on his instagram the other day (I couldn’t find it for reference) – a video describing how to better accomplish your daily tasks. He explains that whether you have three tasks or 100, you can easily get overwhelmed. So it’s better to separate your tasks into themes about outcome. For example if you have a bunch tasks that lead to an outcome — let’s say cleaning different areas of the house that lead to an outcome: a clean environment. Thinking that you have to clean all these different things might lead to a lack of motivation if it’s overwhelming. However, grouping that and thinking of the outcome – a clean house, it’s easier to get up and started. You’ll eventually get to your goal whether it’s a room a day or a part of a room a day.

With this in mind, the 1% rule is sort of like that. If you want to become great at something, you find the small things that can help you get to your outcome. It can be as small as finding more comfortable clothes to run in if you want to become a marathon runner. You take it day by day, 1% at a time.

James Clear did a talk at ConvertKit in 2017 where he talks about the 1% rule in relation to bicyclists — who followed the 1% rule, one very small step at a time, focused on an outcome and went on to surprise the world.

Keeping this 1% rule in mind while focused on a desired outcome, I’m sure that anyone could get better at whatever he/she wants to. It’s hard to find determination when you don’t know how to reach your goals. Thus, 1% at a time is a great way to start. If you improve 1% a day, you would improve 37.8X since you started. The opposite of that is getting 1% worse. Doing nothing, not focused on any goals, kind of just sitting there withering away due to lack of motivation would lead you to 3%. Only 3% of what you one were. I don’t recommend it.

in Closing

Getting 1% better everyday while focusing on your desired outcome and not the mountain of tasks is a much easier and stress-free way to move forward.

If you don’t want to read the book or just want a summary of it, you can find a fantastic summary by the Escaping Ordinary channel on YouTube. He goes over the 1% rule, but also breaks it down further to talk about habits and how to make them better – and other parts of the book.

Remember to always have fun while trying to reach your goals!
